Wheat Bran +wood SUBSTRATE RECIPE for Gourmet mushrooms
Here is a simple Substrate recipe for gourmet and functional mushrooms. All of these ingredients can be purchased at a local grocery store/super market!
Though this isn’t “Masters Mix” in that we are using Wheat Bran for supplementation instead of Soy Hull Pellets, and different ratios. BUT this recipe has never let me down.
~ 5+ lb blocks : 14A bag format
5 cups hardwood pellets
1.4L water (~6 cups)
1.25 cups wheat bran
Add Pellets and bran in; Hydrate; allow to soak; fold press and sterilize bag.
Sterilize at 15 PSI for 2.5 hours if you're running a pressure cooker.
If you pasturize; spawn at a higher ratio. And don’t use weaker mycelial cultures. Lions Mane at low inoculation rates may turn into contamination. Oysters and Ganodermas give you more wiggle room.
Why wheat bran? Plain sawdust is mostly carbon: good structure, not a lot of food. Wheat bran brings the nitrogen and protein that actually feeds your mycelium and drives yield. It's the difference between a block that colonizes fast and flushes heavy versus one that just... sits there. At ~20% of the dry volume it's aggressive enough to push production without turning your block into a contamination magnet, as long as you're sterilizing properly.
