A heat-tolerant, low-humidity-forgiving Hericium erinaceus strain originally sourced from Unkle Fungus (Visit UnkleFungus.com to get it/other products there) in Pennsylvania and one I've been fruiting here in Jacksonville through Florida’s heat. The June Cut is named for the season it performs in, and when Drew found it.

This is Lion's Mane. The classic pom-pom, long tooth fungus with a flavor that rivals seafood, and a compound profile — hericenones and erinacines — that no other organism on Earth produces. If you know Lion's Mane, you know why people grow it. If you don't, this is a good one to start with!

What makes this strain different is where it came from and what I've done with it since. Most Lion's Mane genetics are selected for cool-climate production environments. This is great if you're in the Pacific Northwest, harder if you're running a tent in the Southeast in July. The June Cut has fruited for me consistently in the 90s°F with humidity conditions that would stall a standard strain. I've run it on Masters Mix and documented the results. It performs.

It's now part of the SFF breeding program — being crossed with other warm-adapted isolates to develop H. erinaceus genetics suited for Southern climates. This listing gets you the parent strain while that work continues.

Cultivation Overview

Lion's Mane grows best on supplemented hardwood substrates — Masters Mix, hardwood sawdust with bran, or similar. It appreciates consistent humidity and good fresh air exchange to develop full, well-formed spines rather than tight coral clusters.

Fruiting Conditions

Temperature: 65–85°F (this strain has fruited into the low-mid 90s under field conditions)

Humidity: 60–90% relative humidity during fruiting

Light: Indirect or diffused light is sufficient

Fresh Air Exchange: Moderate — essential for proper spine elongation

Characteristics

  • Sourced from Unkle Fungus, grown out and worked by SFF

  • Heat-tolerant genetics — documented Florida summer performance

  • Dense white pom-pom fruiting bodies, long teeth with age

  • Gourmet and medicinal mushroom

  • Active in the SFF H. erinaceus breeding program

Ideal For

  • Growers in warm or humid climates

  • Anyone who's struggled with Lion's Mane in summer

  • Hericium species collectors

  • Breeders and strain collectors

The June Cut is for growers who want Lion's Mane that actually works where they live — and want to be part of figuring out what Southern genetics can become.

Grow heat-tolerant genetics. Grow clean cultures.
